Here in the U.K., we’ve been in the grip of a heatwave for quite some time now. It’s affected a lot of different elements of our lives, but primarily it’s changed how we behave with our dogs. Intense weather of any kind can bring with it a series of challenges and difficulties, and heat is no exception. Keeping your pet cool in the heat is so important, because they’re often more susceptible to the adverse effects of the sun than we might be. To try and help you make sure that you’re doing the right thing for your dog, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the things that you can do to help keep your pet cool.
Limit Your Exposure
Having an energetic animal in hot weather can present a challenge. Obviously you want them to be able to go out and enjoy some exercise, but it’s often the wrong weather for them to actually do so. It’s best to try and limit the amount of time your dog spends running around in the sun if you can – one walk a day in this weather should be fine. Of course, people who live near cooler areas could possibly go for two, but just take the time to really think about the weather and judge for yourself.
Provide Plenty Of Water
Dehydration can be a major problem for dogs in hot weather, which is why they need enough to drink. You can expect to be able to go for hours without a drink in hot weather, so why should your animal not get the same courtesy? It’s important that you take the time to really think about how much water the dog has, and making sure they’ve got easy access to it as well. This will help to keep your animals safe, and also ensures they’ve got energy to play with you or to do all their favourite things.
Try And Avoid The Car
It’s not uncommon for the modern family to travel in the car to go and walk the dog. With a slew of fresh experiences and new locales available, it’s no wonder that people go further and further afield to walk. However, in hot weather the car can become a risk. The heat is amplified by the confined space and lack of airflow, and even having the windows open can be not enough. It’s important to try and just avoid the car while the weather is uncomfortably hot, and only use it when you absolutely need to or the weather cools off slightly.
Overall, these are just a few of the different things that you can do to keep your animal cool in hot weather. It’s so important to protect your animals from hot weather because they’ve got huge fur coats to contend with. A lot of the time, judge things for yourself. If you wouldn’t be comfortable running around in a fur coat in the heat, chances are your dog won’t be too keen either. If you make sure that they’re hydrated and happy, getting through the heat will be easy and quick.
